Dr. O'Connell has been the recipient of numerous clinical and teaching awards over the course of his career. In 2021, he was recognized by The Permanente Medical Group with the Cecil Cutting Leadership Award, which recognizes the achievements of physician who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the medical group. That same year, Dr. O’Connell received The President’s Volunteer Service Award through AmeriCorps and The Points of Light Foundation for helping to develop an open-source oxygen concentrator to help mitigate the worldwide effects of the COVID pandemic. Dr. O’Connell was named Physician of the Year in 2016 by the Napa and Solano County Medical Society and has been recognized with the 2008 Physician Exceptional Contribution Award and Family Physician of the Year by the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Dr. O’Connell’s podcast, “COVID-19: Commonsense Conversations on the Coronavirus Pandemic,” was named Essential Listening by Apple Podcasts.
